Beate Sirota Gordon
1923 - 2012

American feminist activist.
Gordon was highly involved in writing Japan’s feminist laws—some of the most socially progressive in world—into its post-World War II constitution.
• She partook in this opportunity under the authority of General Douglas MacArthur.
• Gordon grew up in Japan, and spent ten years living in Tokyo until moving to Oakland, California in 1939. During World War II, Gordon was completely cut off from her parents. Thanks to her proficiency in Japanese, she was recruited to work for the Office of War Information to assist in the war effort. After the war, she was able to reunite with her parents, who survived the war as internees.
