• He served in the Haganah paramilitary group during the 1936-1939 Arab revolt, and in the Israel Defense Forces during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Herzog retired from the IDF in 1962.
• After leaving the IDF, Herzog practiced law.
• From 1975 to 1978, he served as Israel's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, a position in which he denounced, and symbolically ripped apart, UN General Assembly Resolution 3379 - also known as the "Zionism is Racism" resolution.
