Gabbai was forced to work as a Sonderkommando at Auschwitz, in which he was made to assist in burning the bodies of hundreds of thousands of murdered Jews.

• He remained at Auschwitz until it was evacuated in January 1945.

• Gabbai was the last living known survivor of the Sonderkommando until his passing in 2020.
