Crook fought in the Spanish Civil War against the Spanish nationalists (also known as the Francoists).

After being wounded in combat, he was recruited by the Soviet Union, and sent to China during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

• He returned to England, working for British intelligence throughout Asia during World War II.

• After World War II, Crook eventually settled in China, staying there for most of the remainder of his life.
