Windsor was the lead plaintiff in US v. Windsor (2013), a landmark victory for the American LGBT community. • US v. Windsor overturned Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, which federally defined marriage as between one man and one woman as a husband and wife. • The section was deemed unconsitutitonal under the guarantee of equal protection prescribed by the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment to the US Constitution.
