Gensler served as chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 2021 to 2025.

As SEC chair, he pursued an aggressive enforcement campaign against the cryptocurrency industry.

• He previously served as chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) from 2009 to 2014, and as Under Secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance from 1999 to 2001.

• He spent 18 years at Goldman Sachs, where he became a partner, and is a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management.
