Sokolnikov was a member of the Politburo, the highest policy-making authority within the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

• He held joint control with Stalin over Bolshevik newspapers after Lenin was forced into hiding in 1917.

• Later, Sokolnikov was executed during the Great Purge as a result of his outspoken opposition to Stalin.
