In 1978, he sponsored a San Francsico bill banning discrimination based on sexual orientation, signed into law by Mayor George Moscone.

• Following the bill's passage, both Milk and Moscone were assassinated by a former city supervisor, turning Milk into a martyr in the LGBT community.
