Bloch co-founded tax preparation company H&R Block with his brother Richard in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1955.

The brothers spelled the company's name "Block" because they believed it was easier to spell and pronounce than "Bloch."

• He served as the company's CEO until 1992 and as its chairman until 2000.

• During World War II, he flew 32 combat missions over Europe as a B-17 bomber navigator, earning the Air Medal.
