Marcuse criticized what he saw as new forms of “social control”, including Soviet communism, during this period. His book “Eros and Civilization” helped shape the LGBT liberation movement and subcultures of the 1960s. Marcuse also worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the CIA, from 1943 to 1950.
