A New York University survey ranked the Weekly 16th among the top 100 works of American journalism of the 20th century.

• Before launching the Weekly, he wrote for The Nation, the New York Post, and the newspaper PM.

• His books include The Hidden History of the Korean War (1952) and The Trial of Socrates (1988).

• Some historians have alleged, based on Soviet intelligence records, that he had contacts with Soviet intelligence in the 1930s; others, including his biographer, dispute the claim.
