Oppenheimer is known as the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role in the Manhattan Project during World War II.

• After WWII, he was made chairman of the General Advisory Committee of the newly created US Atomic Energy Commission.

• Oppenheimer lobbied for international control of nuclear power, in order to avoid further nuclear proliferation and escalation.
