Shell served as the CEO of NBCUniversal Media from 2019 to 2023.

In April 2023, Shell resigned from NBCUniversal, following an internal investigation into an allegedely inappropriate relationship.

• He signed an open letter in 2008 endorsing Barack Obama's presidential campaign titled "Pennsylvania Jews for Obama".

• In 2020, The New York Times reported that Shell was considering replacing CNBC's primetime offerings with right-wing talk shows, in a bid to appeal to conservative viewers.
