Mermelstein won a five-year court battle against the Institute of Historical Review, a Holocaust denial organization, in 1981.

• The organization had offered a $50,000 bounty on information "proving the existence" of the murderous gas chambers at Auschwitz. A California Superior Court judge ruled in favor of Mermelstein, also forcing the organization to pay him $1 million in damages for psychological suffering.
