Schapiro invented "femmage”, a type of feminist art where objects traditionally associated with women (fabric, apron, handkerchiefs) were made into a collage.

She used craft elements, and icons associated with feminity (hearts, flowers, the color pink) to express concepts of feminity in paintings.
