Mechoulam was the first person to isolate and achieve total synthesis of THC, the active element in cannabis that generates a "high" effect for the user.

Mechoulam first studied chemical engineering in Bulgaria in 1944, but claims to have disliked it. Later, upon immigrating to Israel in 1949, he studied chemistry. His first research experience was in the Israeli Army, working on insecticides.
