Mattus co-founded premium ice cream brand Häagen-Dazs with his wife, Rose Mattus, in the Bronx in 1960.

He invented the Danish-sounding brand name, which has no meaning, reportedly in part as a tribute to Denmark's rescue of its Jews during World War II.

• The couple sold Häagen-Dazs to Pillsbury in 1983 for a reported $70 million.

• Before founding Häagen-Dazs, he worked in his family's frozen-dessert business in the Bronx.
