Posner is a pioneer of "law and economics," which applies economic reasoning to legal questions, and has been called the most-cited legal scholar of the 20th century.

He served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit from 1981 to 2017, including as chief judge from 1993 to 2000.
