Roth was a defendant in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Roth v. United States, which de facto legalized pornography nationwide.

Although the Supreme Court actually ruled that obscenity was not protected speech under the First Amendment, the Court drastically changed the legal definition of what actually constituted "obscenity" that the government could constitutionally censor. The updated definition effectively rendered it toothless against pornographic materials.
