Credited with saving the unsold Superman comic strip from the rejection pile.

As one of the earliest employees of National Allied Publications, later known as DC Comics, Mayer published most of his work there. He was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall Of Fame in 2000.
